Time has begun…

SCHOOLS’ RUGBY 2008. PRESS HAS ALREADY NAMED ITS BABES. AS USUAL, PARTIAL TREATMENT TO KANDY.

The School Rugby Season for 2008 is just kicking off. This week will see the first blood being drawn as, to my knowledge, at least 3 fixtures will go ahead between now and Saturday.

Going through last weekend’s English newspapers, however, we learn that “controversy” – arguably the winner of last season’s league [only second, maybe, to St Peter's] – is still lurking around the playing area. This time around, it is St. Peter’s who has decided to initiate matters by crying foul. Apparently, the SPC XV have been allocated 6 “Away” games and only 2 “Home” fixtures. All this had occured in the absence of their MIC had [for some reason or the other] failed to attend the draw. So, as to who is at fault is a matter inviting debate; but, my superstitious strain tells me that this might just be an early “knock on” and that the best “off field” rucks are yet to be.

Among other things that haven’t improved since last season (well, this has never improved and one doubts whether it will, ever, improve at all) is the unabashed bias shown to Colombo schools by the local press. The Sunday Times reporting on the season-to-be last Sunday, singles out five schools to be “top contenders” for the Division 1 plum this year. The schools thus privileged are St. Peter’s, Royal, St. Thomas’, Isipathana and Trinity.

Local rugby writers are pant-less in showing their Colombo bias

Of course, St Peter’s and Isipathana can well be the pre-season devils on the rampage this season after their sizzling moves last year — which, by all indications, they have carried into the present season. But, as to how the three members of the “Old Pals’ Club” – Royal, Thomas’ and Trinity – came in among the pre-season “top” teams is highly questionable. If at all, it only shows the elite bias our reporters and “experts” on rugby carry with them.

One column written by an expert on rugby. The column, very often, has an Old Tie bias.

Incidentally, five of the nine schools for Division 1are from Kandy and (except for Trinity) none gets mentioned in the above Sunday Times report. Kingswood, Vidyartha, St. Anthony’s, and Dharmaraja join the safari from Kandy and though it is easy for a Colombo 07 news journalist to converse with the Colombo schools, when reporting to the nation, you cannot / should not have such a lukewarm  agenda.

The press has always been lousy on Kandy — be it school’s rugby or club rugby. And this schools’ season one need not be surprised if the same show continues.

Kandy’s games commence on the 24th May with Kingswood taking on Royal at Bogambara.

  1. Kingswood beat Royal 13-7

  2. well, i’ll drink for this! every word mentioned is true.i think nathe too will say yes if he sees this. even thoughhe is busy sewing undies to europian and american suddees. hey, by the way why don’t you update the match status as well? what happned to kingswood royal match? a trinitial who is working with me just now said they won the match against pathana today.29-10 something. or was it 19-10?

  3. This one was not written by me mate. Yes — TCK downed Patana with 29-10.

  4. Peterites on top

  5. Well my friends……look into the latest stats of the school rugby….

No matter what…..look whos back in the game???Colombo 07???
Look in to History and All those schools have earned the names and except Trinity (few times and of cause because of Bradby the “Main Event” ), non of other Kandy schools have records….

  6. Well, Aif, what ur trying to state is not 100% clear…are you, by the way, suggesting that Kandy schools other than Trinity have no track record???? And what do you mean by “according to latest stats”?

Let me remind you that both Kingswood and St.Anthoney’s are two schools from kandy that has a rich rugby history both on catalogue and on the field. Both teams have entered the top 4 for the last 8 years — which shows the standard of their play. Take the national XV — which consists of incomparable palyers like marija, saliya kumara, bisthamin, pradeep liyanage, withanage, the weerakkodys…………etc who are from kandy.

In any case, the point of the blod article was to say that newspaper reporters in SL do NOT even recognize the potential of Kandy schools. The reason is pretty plain — the journalism of our island is governed by the elite TCK-Royal-STC mentality. Beat that now!

  7. And Aif, what do you mean by “latest records”????? The latest points table for Division 1-A is as follows:

    1. Trinity
    2. Kingswood
    3. ……………………who cares?????

    so, what’s the point?

And to say that Kandy has no rugby past — it’s another way of saying, “hey, i donno what im talking about here”…. Cheers mate!!

  8. hey ‘ AIF’, are you the main buwa in the TV series ELF which was telecasted sometime back? you remeber the guy with that Walas skin and Nari homba? well, i think you sure do have some similarities staring from the name to the game! well, if you are the same guy, can you just sign my autograph? cheers man!!you sure know what you talk about!!!

  9. Aif leave all the things out. just simply take the SL rugby team. Look at the players. Where do they come from??? 3/4 are from kandy schools. Other than that in the caltex awards there were 8 titles been presented and from the 8 titles 7 were given to kandy. WHY? think abt that. What do colombo got, oh ya they got contacts. But it doesn’t matter only the talent will be worth.

  10. Aif,

Who ever you are before making a comment PLEASE do your home work!
Kandy is the start of School rugby. speaking on History Kingswood is the oldest Rugby playing school in SL.

going for recent days with RECORDS – as you state. from 2000 – 2007,
majourity of the knockouts were won by a Kandy School (Kingswood) and St. Anthoneys, Dharmaraja had been in the last picks (most o the time till getting beaten by another Kandy school) and been among the favorites. for the last 2-3 years St. Peters had played good Rugby but they’ve never been able to be called as a “RECORD BREAKING” team.

so next time PLEASE know what you are speaking about! or your stupidity would be quite visible… WORDS are there for you to express, but when you use them without any BASIS – you express BULL SH*T!

  11. St Peters NOT record breaking???
    Mr. Rip Van Winkle,
SPC were Double champs for past two years : Last
year unbeaten Double champs – what more…
oh here’s more : Only school to beat league
champs (Kingswood) and Runners up (Trinity)
    in the league this season:
or what about history – only school to beat
Trinity for 5 yrs in a row after been introduced
to Rugby in the 1930’s- this record is still not
broken by any school. Talk about record breaking; Can think of more – but have work to do!

  12. Kingswood = triple league champs 2003, 2004, 2005. Unbeaten for a record 78 straight games between 2003-2006. Highest winning score in the history of Division 1 rugby 87-0 against wesley (2006) — which the press failed to cover.

Beating KCK and TCK won’t help if they failed to win the League.

KCK has beaten Trinity 5 years from 2002-2006…how can “beating Trinity for an X number of years” qualify as a record? What kind of elitist record is that?

Wake up Mr. Winkle yourself — don’t you think undue emphasis and press space is given to Bradby and STC and Royal even IN SEASONS WHERE THEY DONT PERFORM???? Think about it. Don’t confine ur views to SPC. Check press reports over the years. Its true = Kandy gets lesser space and treatment…
