WHEN THE KINGS WOULD MEET THE TRINITY…

June 19, 2008

Bogambora, the 22nd of June: pre-match rumour has it that free tickets are being issued for the school boys for the Singer Division A decider clash between Kingswood and Trinity, this coming Sunday.

In a related development, a Facebook Invitation is being circulated inviting Kingswoodians and Trinitians for this potential cruncher.

Others tell us plain that they [...]

KINGSWOOD DECIDE TO SHAKE RATTLES AND SUCK POPSICLES. Honorary Mention for the lousiest display this schools’ season

May 10, 2008

Kingswood, Kandy, is the school that introduced rugby to Sri Lankan schools in 1893. In recent times, they have been one of the more fancied, crowed-pullers, winning the Super League thrice between 2003-2006 and dominating many other domestic schools’ championships.

However, no one would have believed any of these had they seen Kingswood playing this evening, [...]

BIRTHDAY GIFT TO KINGSWOOD. “looks de stay low”: ANTHO HONEYED @ NITTAWELA

May 4, 2008

Kingswood, Kandy celebrated its 117th anniversary in style as they made a late charge against an agile Anthonian attack at Nittawela this evening. The visitors from Randles’ Hill clinched the game 19-12, after trailing 7-3 at the breather.

However, the game was a huge let off from the stand point of “quality”, as loose ball [...]

UNIFUSION 2008 – STUDENTS UNION DECIDES TO DRUM “WHO LET THE DOGS OUT”.

May 3, 2008

UNIFUSION – the Peradeniya University Music Society’s all faculty evening of rhythm and dance – had many beats to it this time. The most irritating of these was a band of dissenters sent there (?) by what we believe is the / a hand of the Students’ Union, which has differences with an alternative student-political [...]

SCHOOLS’ RUGBY 2008. PRESS HAS ALREADY NAMED ITS BABES. AS USUAL, PARTIAL TREATMENT TO KANDY.

April 23, 2008

The School Rugby Season for 2008 is just kicking off. This week will see the first blood being drawn as, to my knowledge, at least 3 fixtures will go ahead between now and Saturday.

Going through last weekend’s English newspapers, however, we learn that “controversy” – arguably the winner of last season’s league [only second, maybe, to [...]

SRI LANKAN CREATIVITY. 1st SESSION OVER. WHAT’S NEW: CHINTHY of KRONIK ENTERTAINMENT and KRISHAN were BAPTIZED AS POETS

April 19, 2008

Vihanga [who contributes to the Poetry section here] and Sulla of black metal fame opened a tripartite dialogue on ”Sri Lankan creativity” on Saturday the 19th @ Kamani’s.
The focus on Saturday’s session was “Redefining poetry in our current context”. The dialogue, in fact, became a monologue as both parties waved a “high five” for the definition of poetry [...]

WIMAL AND LAL — WHAT’S THAT GOTTA DO WITH IT?

April 14, 2008

Our interpretations may fit the politics within which we operate; but, the Wimal Weerawansa ejection (or, as Wimal himself put it, the pending verdict against him) from the JVP was, for me, a modern day tragedy of the classical definition. The great man (within his political context, of course), the persuer of the grand design, [...]

ARTS TAKES DEM HEARTS AWAY — DRAMSOC 2008 DIES WITH JULIET’S LAST SIGH

April 6, 2008

Saturday the 5th of April. EOE Pereira Memorial Hall, Faculty of Engineering, University of Peradeniya. Ten minutes past nine in the evening. The talk of the moment — “the devil”.
It indeed was the devil of creativity as DRAMSOC 2008 ended with a thunderous applause not only for the prize-winners, but also to the fantastic fusioning [...]

MONK ROCKS THE BUS

March 29, 2008

This, to me, was the worst cultural farce of recent times. Happened on Thursday the 26th, in a bus bound from Kandy to Mahakanda. Time was around 8.40-8.45, just after the morning rush hour. It all began when, at Getambe, near the Teaching Hospital, a young monk got in to the bus. And, indeed, no [...]
